Things to Do in Memmingen
Market Square
The historic market square is the heart of the old town and is surrounded by historic buildings like the Town hall, Wheelhouse and Great Guild building. Memmingen was granted the right to have its own market by order of the king during the 12th century. Since then, there’s been a market several times a week and it has never been canceled. Even during war times, the market was held as long as there was something to offer.
The market is on Tuesdays and Saturdays today, so you can pay it a visit Saturday morning and eat Seb’s favorite market sausage (look out for the orange food truck “Waibel’s Imbiss” and you want to order the rote Bockwurst with mustard).
City Wall, Stadtbach and Witch Towers
The kilometer-long, well-preserved city wall around the old town is the largest monument in the city. You can walk and explore the five city gates, six towers and three tower ruins which still exist today.
Stadtbach is a picturesque river flowing right through the old town, flanked by terraces, restaurants and cafés. We celebrate Fischertag every year since 1465: The town creek is fished out to be drained and cleaned, and at the same time the “Fisherman’s king” is determined among almost 1,200 fishermen by jumping into the water at the same time and trying to catch the biggest trout. Unfortunately, the creek might be empty when you visit in August as Fischertag takes place late July.
Memmingen also has a witch tower (Hexenturm) in its Old Town that you can view if you dare. The witch tower is the oldest surviving city tower. In the lower building it dates from the time the city was founded (around 1150).
